Asking for more money when you have never done it before
Most people take the first number they are offered, and then spend two years resenting it.
Two things that make the conversation easier:
- Know one number before you start: what similar work pays where the company is, not where you are. You may not get it, but you will stop negotiating against yourself.
- Ask about the range before you give a figure. "What range is budgeted for this role?" is a normal question and a lot of people will simply answer it.
If you have successfully negotiated up: what did you say, and what did they say back? Exact words are more useful here than principles.
