Most people take the first number they are offered, and then spend two years resenting it. Two things that make the conversation easier: - Know one number before you start: what similar work pays where the company is, not where you are. You may not get it, but you will stop negotiating against yourself. - Ask about the range before you give a figure. "What range is budgeted for this role?" is a normal question and a lot of people will simply answer it. If you have successfully negotiated up: what did you say, and what did they say back? Exact words are more useful here than principles.
