About the role

Here at Hometap, we’re collaborative, passionate, and always ready to roll up our sleeves to create solutions that help people get more out of homeownership — and out of life. Our first product, a home equity investment, gives homeowners the opportunity to quickly access the equity they’ve built in their home to pay for what’s most important to them, from handling debt to finally making much-needed renovations, without taking on debt.

We work hard, and have some fun along the way, too. You don’t have to take our word for it: The Boston Globe and Forbes have recognized us as a great place to work, and we’ve been honored for our commitment to innovation in the fintech space by Inc., HousingWire, and more!

In case you need any more convincing, we also provide competitive compensation, healthcare coverage, generous PTO, a meaningful equity package, and a strong culture with plenty of opportunities for team-building and camaraderie.

Interested in joining us on our mission to make homeownership less stressful and more accessible? We’d love to talk.

Who You Are
As Hometap's Underwriting Manager, you'll own day-to-day management of the underwriting team, reporting to the Director of Originations. You're responsible for running current and future team operations to hit individual, team, and company metrics, supporting individual development, resolving escalations, identifying opportunities for improvement, and working cross-functionally to build solutions. This work sits at the center of Hometap's investment process, helping fulfill the mission of making homeownership less stressful and more accessible.
You'll need to be execution-oriented with exceptional attention to detail, and able to think critically about risk on a unique product as guidelines and market conditions shift. Following existing processes while iterating on future versions of them will be central to the role. You're a great fit if you bring several years of residential underwriting experience, experience managing a production-based team, and the attention to detail needed to catch what others miss.
What You'll Do

Own day-to-day management of the underwriting team, driving productivity, accuracy, service quality, and guideline adherence

Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Processing, and Closing teams

Evaluate applicant information against underwriting criteria to flag high-risk cases, confirm application completeness, and make investment recommendations

Serve as the first point of contact for eligibility escalations

Advise the team on investment decisions for edge cases and escalations, in line with Hometap's risk threshold

Identify and mitigate underwriting risks, including monitoring QC error trends and emerging risk patterns

Coach and develop underwriters to drive high performance in pipeline management, communication, and quality

Ensure team members adhere to investor guidelines and Hometap procedures

Participate in recruiting, career development, and succession planning for the team

Propose actionable plans and adapt underwriting processes as circumstances change

What You Bring

5+ years of underwriting experience in residential finance

2+ years of experience managing a production-based team

Extraordinary attention to detail, with strong proofreading and fact-checking skills

Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, particularly in nuanced, gray-area situations

Comfortable working with legal and compliance leaders to escalate potential issues

Ability to multitask and work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment

Experience managing, motivating, and developing a team

Proactive approach to daily work, with the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities

Clear, effective communication skills, with the ability to work well across Sales, Processing, and Closing

Strong client service skills

Bachelor's degree, ideally in business, finance, or a related field

The salary range for this role is $110,000 - $125,000, depending on your experience, skills, location, and other factors. You’ll also be eligible for additional incentives and receive meaningful equity, so you can share in our growth and success. We offer generous medical, dental, and vision coverage, a work-from-home stipend, parental leave, and plenty of paid time off to recharge.
