About the Role
Our client is looking for an experienced Technical Business Analyst (Data) to join a high-performing data and analytics team on a contract basis. You will act as the bridge between business stakeholders and technical data teams, translating business needs into clear, well-defined data requirements, mappings and specifications that engineers, architects and analysts can build against.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable in a workshop with senior stakeholders and in a SQL editor profiling source data. You will shape data solutions end to end, from discovery and requirements through to testing and delivery.
Key Responsibilities

Engage with business and technical stakeholders to elicit, analyze and document data and reporting requirements

Translate business needs into functional and technical specifications, user stories and acceptance criteria

Perform source system analysis and data profiling using SQL to assess data quality, structure and completeness

Produce source-to-target mappings, data dictionaries, business glossaries and data lineage documentation

Work closely with data engineers, data architects and BI developers to design and deliver data pipelines, data models and reports

Define and validate business rules, transformation logic and data quality checks

Support data migration, integration and data warehouse / Lakehouse initiatives

Plan and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT), including preparing test cases and validating outputs against requirements

Identify data gaps, risks and dependencies, and recommend practical solutions

Support data governance, metadata management and data privacy practices

Contribute to Agile ceremonies, including backlog refinement, sprint planning and show-and-tells

Provide clear status updates and manage stakeholder expectations throughout delivery

Essential Skills and Experience

7+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, with a strong focus on data, analytics or data platform projects

Strong SQL skills for querying, profiling, validating and reconciling data

Proven experience writing source-to-target mappings and data transformation specifications

Solid understanding of data warehousing, data modelling (dimensional, relational) and ETL / ELT concepts

Experience working with modern cloud data platforms (for example Azure, AWS, Snowflake, Databricks or Microsoft Fabric)

Experience gathering requirements for BI and reporting solutions (for example Power BI, Tableau or similar)

Strong knowledge of data quality, data governance and metadata management principles

Experience working in Agile / Scrum delivery environments

Excellent documentation skills, including BRDs, FRDs, user stories, process flows and data models

Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail

Desirable Skills

Experience with data catalogue or governance tools (for example Microsoft Purview, Collibra or Alation)

Familiarity with transformation tools such as dbt, Azure Data Factory or similar orchestration tooling

Working knowledge of Python for data analysis

Experience with Jira and Confluence

Exposure to data migration programs or large-scale data platform modernisation

Industry experience in financial services, government, utilities, retail or similar data-rich sectors

Relevant certifications (for example CBAP, IIBA-CBDA, Azure Data Fundamentals or similar)
