About the role

🏢 Who we are
A team from Germany with the vision to make advanced network security accessible for everyone
We are a software company developing an open-source zero-trust network security platform that is both easy to use and affordable for teams of all sizes and budgets. Our mission is grounded in a simple yet powerful belief: secure private networking is a fundamental right of every modern company.
Since our launch on GitHub in 2021, we have gained trust among thousands of companies seeking secure and seamless solutions for connecting remote employees and infrastructure. By replacing traditional centralized VPNs, NetBird has become a trusted choice for modern network security, connecting today hundreds of thousands of users and machines worldwide. Our open-source, community-driven approach has been a key driver of our success. We listen to our users, and their input helps us make network security better for everyone.

✏️ What you will do
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will play a key role in building and scaling the infrastructure behind NetBird’s global networking platform. You’ll ensure our systems are reliable, secure, and performant while enabling engineers to ship quickly and confidently.
This role sits at the intersection of infrastructure, networking, and backend systems. You’ll work closely with engineering teams to design and operate the platform that powers secure, peer-to-peer connectivity for users around the world. Specifically, you will:
Design, build, and operate scalable cloud infrastructure and infrastructure-as-code for NetBird's globally distributed management and relay services.

Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support rapid, reproducible, and safe delivery of backend and client components.

Own service reliability: implement observability (metrics, logs, tracing), lead incident response, and drive postmortems with actionable improvements.

Collaborate with backend and networking engineers to optimize routing, connectivity, and overall system performance.

Build internal tooling and automation to improve developer experience and support NetBird's open-source ecosystem.

If you read this far and think: "that's me!" - You probably won't need to read any further, and we should have a conversation. But if you doubt the type of experience we expect you to have, the following should help clarify.

🔎 What we are looking for
We’re looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys solving complex networking challenges, and cares deeply about building reliable systems for real users.

Strong experience operating production systems on AWS, GCP, or similar

Hands-on with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi) and Kubernetes

Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines

Solid networking fundamentals (IP, routing, NAT, DNS)

Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) and production incident response

Strong sense of ownership - you see problems through from detection to resolution to prevention

Thrive in a fast-paced environment and comfortable working independently

Nice-to-Haves
Experience working with WireGuard or VPN technologies.

Familiarity with peer-to-peer networking and NAT traversal techniques (e.g., STUN, TURN, ICE).

Experience operating globally distributed systems with low-latency requirements.

Experience with gRPC and REST-based services.

Background in security best practices for networked systems.

Contributions to open-source projects.

Experience supporting or interacting with developer communities via GitHub or similar platforms.
